This state of the art facility will serve the rest stop needs of hundreds of thousands of motorists each year. The theme for the rest area is “education” which is expressed by custom clay tile and artwork incorporated into the building’s interior and exterior finishes, as well as the “school house” shelters located adjacent to the structure. The building sits on shallow spread footings with load bearing masonry walls supporting exposed glued-laminated trusses spanning the lobby and glued-laminated beams spanning the restrooms. The geometry of the prefabricated trusses, used for the back portion of the building, was designed to enable a mechanical loft to be constructed above the ceiling. This permits more efficient use of ground floor space. The clear story vestibule and lobby glazing provides a very spacious feeling and allows an exceptional amount of natural light to enter the space. The unique shelter facilities, lighted walkways with plaques describing historical Iowa events, all help to make this rest area one to remember.
