description

The proposed University of Iowa Blank Honors Building will house new multi-media classrooms, study rooms, offices and conference rooms. This unique six story structure is composed of composite steel beam construction along with cast-in-place concrete elevator shafts and shearwalls to provide lateral stability. A drilled shaft foundation system was utilized to minimize vibrations and intrusion on the existing Daum Hall foundation located a few feet to the East. The floors were designed with multiple step back cantilevers to enhance the buildings exterior appearance. The interior showcases a 2nd floor bridge that is hung from the 3rd floor with tension rods and provides a very open and spacious feeling due to the large amount of exterior glazing. This bridge will eventually project to the South creating a skywalk that connects this building to the proposed Careers Center.
